Kurtis Vogel

In May of 2021, Detective Kurtis Vogel received the news no one would ever want to hear, “you have cancer”. A golf ball sized tumor was discovered after a colonoscopy. Immediately, in true Kurtis fashion, he began his calls and wasted no time in scheduling every appointment possible to tackle this beast. Kurtis started treatment within a few weeks and was diagnosed with stage 3 Colorectal Cancer. Over the course of many scans, a tiny spot was discovered on his liver, which made his diagnosis jump to stage 4. Kurtis started off receiving chemotherapy and radiation locally in Virginia Beach, but when the cancer started to spread in his liver his wife, Brianne, pushed him to get a second opinion at Duke Cancer Center in North Carolina. Despite his cancer diagnosis, Kurtis went into work between chemotherapy treatments and continued to do what he loved, work alongside the men and women of the Virginia Beach Police Department. Kurtis and his family received an outpouring of support from the VBPD, as well as Brianne’s job, being a Virginia Beach teacher. Kurtis remained a dedicated father to his 2 young children, Kayden and Kaia, through his fight with cancer. Unfortunately, the cancer continued to spread, eventually to his spine and brain. Kurtis passed away on March 5, 2023 peacefully at his home in Virginia Beach. Kurtis is deeply missed by all that knew him, especially by his wife and kids. Fighting cancer is no easy feat, but Kurtis did it fearlessly and was determined to get all the time he could with his family. The Vogel family feels truly blessed despite losing Kurtis for all of the support they have received. Together with the Chiaverotti Family, the Vogel family would like Kurtis and Matt’s legacy to live on and pay it forward to other families going through a similar struggle.
